BUILDING COMMUNITY CAPACITY TO SUPPORT FATHERS

children's toys
Our research team (Dr. Shawna J. Lee, Donna Harris, & Gregory Hoffman) conducted a community-based participatory research (CBPR) informed needs assessment of programs, services, and support systems for fathers in the City of Detroit. We collected data from multiple sources, including via: (1) interviews with social service agencies and individuals that provide services to families, examining their programs and outreach to fathers; and (2) community dialogues with men, examining their parenting needs. Our needs assessment involved multiple iterations of member checking, community forums with service providers, and feedback from a Community Advisory Board of Detroit-based experts, with the goal of addressing health disparities related to the lack of services for fathers and men in Detroit.
